ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference and the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation are pleased to continue their partnership with Literacy Inc. (LINC) to support future programming initiatives during the 2017-18 academic year in New York City. The announcement comes prior to the start of the 2018 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, which begins at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
"We are excited the that CFP Foundation and Big Ten partnership will continue to make a lasting impact in New York City through LINC," said CFP Foundation Executive Director Britton Banowsky. "Reading proficiently is a life changer, and this partnership will help bridge the opportunity gap for children in these neighborhoods."
Students, parents and teachers from the LINC program will attend games at the tournament and an on-court recognition will take place during Thursday's Noon game, on the second day of the tournament. This marks the second-consecutive year that the Big Ten has contributed to LINC's efforts across the five boroughs, as they partnered to sponsor Reading on the Rails and Reading Everywhere Month in 2016-17.
LINC's Comprehensive Literacy Model provides interconnected programming designed to mobilize existing resources in the neighborhood in order to deliver reading opportunities for children. The combination of three program areas - Reading Buddies, Parent Engagement, and Reading Everywhere Programs - emphasize and reinforce the importance of bringing literacy home and create a sustainable culture around reading.
"We are excited to continue our partnership with the CFP Foundation and Literacy, INC in New York City for a second straight year," Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany said. "We recognize the importance of early childhood literacy in the development of the next generation of college students, and we are thrilled to build upon this growing partnership with LINC and its commitment to supporting youth programs across the five boroughs."
As part of this program, the conference was also able to provide 100 tickets to LINC for Super Saturday - College Hoops and Hockey Doubleheader at Madison Square Garden on January 20, 2018, which were used by students, parents and teachers in the program.
The activation marks the second educational initiative that the Big Ten and the CFP Foundation have partnered on during the 2017-18 academic year. In conjunction with the CFP Foundation's Extra Yard for Teachers initiative, the Big Ten recognized 15 teachers at the 2017 Big Ten Football Championship Game in Indianapolis, while providing funds to enhance educational efforts in those teachers' respective classrooms and schools.
