Northwestern's Michael Thompson Nabs Weekly Honor
March 2, 2009
Player of the Week:
Michael Thompson garners his first weekly laurel after helping lead Northwestern to a pair of victories last week, averaging 15.0 points, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. The sophomore point guard scored 16 points to go along with five assists in the Wildcats' historic win at Indiana on Wednesday. The victory was NU's first in Bloomington in 41 years and gave the Wildcats their first sweep of the Hoosiers since the 1967-68 season. Thompson then carried over his consistent performance to Sunday, posting 14 points, four assists and two steals in Northwestern’s win over Iowa. With the Wildcats trailing by seven midway through the second half, Thompson nailed three-pointers on three consecutive possessions to tie the game and eventually help lead NU to victory. The win was NU's 13th home victory of the season, tying the school single-season record. Overall, Thompson went 8-13 (.615) from the field, 6-10 (.600) from behind the arc, and was perfect from the charity stripe, sinking 8-of-8 free throws while committing only two turnovers over the two contests.
