GAME NOTES

 

The No. 7 seed improves to 3-5 in games against No. 10 seeds.  The No. 7 seed is 1-1 in quarterfinal contests.  Iowa enters tomorrow's game vs. Michigan State 2-4 in quarterfinal contests.

 

Iowa improves to 2-0 against Purdue in Big Ten Tournament (BTT) games.  Iowa previously defeated Purdue (87-72) in the 2002 first round played in Indianapolis, IN.

 

Iowa improves to 9-6 in BTT games and 2-1 as a No. 7 seed.  The Hawkeyes won their first BTT opening game since bouncing Purdue in the first round of the 2002 BTT as a No. 9 seed (L, 66-46 to Ohio State in 2003 and L, 79-70 to Michigan in 2004).  The Hawkeyes also improve to 4-1 in first round contests and 6-4 in BTT games played at the United Center.  Iowa improves to 7-5 in all games played at the United Center (W, 83-53 vs. Texas Tech and L, 80-62 vs. Duke in 2002).  Purdue falls to 1-4 in BTT first round games and 3-8 overall.

 

Iowa's nine wins is second-best in BTT games.  Illinois ranks first (13), while Michigan State is third (8).

 

Today was the third meeting between the two schools this season, with each team winning on its home floor during the regular season.

 

Iowa is the last team to beat Purdue and Boilermaker Head Coach Gene Keady, while Iowa was the last team Purdue and Keady defeated (66-63 on Feb. 16 in West Lafayette).  Iowa won its fifth consecutive game, while Purdue finishes its season on a five-game losing skid.

 

Iowa posted its 20th victory of the season, marking the 22nd time in school history the Hawkeyes registered 20 wins or more in a single season.  Iowa has posted 20 wins or more in a single season twice under Coach Steve Alford.

 

The Hawkeyes recorded assists on 21-of-26 of their field goals.  The 21 assists is an Iowa BTT record.  The previous high was 20 set vs. Minnesota in the first round of the BTT on March 9, 2000.

 

Horner collected a game-high eight assists.  The eight assists match his own total vs. Ohio State in 2003 and Dean Oliver vs. Penn State in 2001 for the Iowa's highest assist total in a BTT game. 

 

Iowa scored 12 of the game's first 14 points in the first 5:33 and never trailed in the game.

 

Purdue Head Coach Gene Keady completed his legendary career, serving as a head coach 27 years -- 25 with Purdue.  Keady's overall record is 550-289, which ranks 43rd on the NCAA Division I career coaching list.  He boasted a 512-270 record with the Boilermakers, 265-169 Big Ten mark and a 3-8 Big Ten Tournament record.

 

Horner collected eight assists to move him into sixth on Iowa's career assists list with 169.  He is four helpers from tying B.J. Armstrong for fifth with 173.  The junior guard moved past Ronnie Lester (8th) and Dean Oliver (7th).

 

Iowa forward Mike Henderson matched a career high with 11 points (5-9 FG, 1-2 3-PT FG).  He also netted 11 points at Purdue on Feb. 16.

 

Hawkeye center Erik Hansen corralled six rebounds, his best rebounding total since hauling in five vs. Saint Louis on Dec. 31 - a span of 16 games.

 

Iowa improved to 16-2 when leading at the half, while Purdue falls to 0-16 when trailing at the break.  The Hawkeyes also improve to 16-1 when scoring between 70-79 points.

 

Iowa was 9-20 from 3-point range matching an Iowa BTT single game record for made 3-pointers.  The Hawkeyes were 9-16 from beyond the arc vs. Minnesota in the first round of the 2000 BTT.

 

Purdue's fifth straight loss in BTT play is the longest all-time losing streak in the eight years of the BTT.

 

Purdue scored 52 points.  Teams are 4-18 when scoring less the 54 points in BTT history.

 

During Purdue's five-game losing skid, it has shot 35.4 percent from the field and its average margin of defeat was 14.8.
