Park Ridge, Ill.—As the winter term of the 2010-11 school year comes to a close, the conference office recognizes a total of 524 winter sports athletes who have been named Academic All-Big Ten. The list of honored student-athletes features 37 men’s and 55 women’s basketball players, 42 men’s and 46 women’s gymnasts, 100 men’s and 181 women’s swimming and diving athletes and 63 wrestlers. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
At least six Big Ten student-athletes have maintained unblemished GPAs. Five swimming and diving team members boast cumulative 4.0 GPAs in Iowa’s Anna Flessner (So., Engineering), Michigan State’s Sarah Mory (Sr., Mathematics) and Brian Rockwell (Sr., Mechanical Engineering) and Purdue’s Lauren Gustafson (So., General Health Sciences) and Katie Hingst (So., Didactic Dietetics). Also with a perfect GPA is Purdue women’s basketball player Chelsea Jones (Jr., Biology).
The Big Ten Academic All-Conference award winners also achieved excellence outside of the classroom. Michigan’s Kylee Botterman (Sr., General Studies) was tabbed Gymnast of the Year. In the pool, Minnesota’s Kelci Bryant (Jr., Communications) was named Big Ten Diver of the Year, while Indiana’s Eric Ress (Jr., Biology) and Wisconsin’s Maggie Meyer (Sr., English and Religious Studies) earned Swimmer of the Year accolades. On the mat, Penn State’s David Taylor (So., Division of Undergraduate Studies) was named Wrestler of the Year, while teammate Quentin Wright (Jr., Management) earned Wrestler of the Championships honors.
The conference office will also present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference’s Academic All-Big Ten program.
