Big Ten Men's Basketball Weekly Release - Nov. 18

  • The third annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, an annual early-season series of eight games played between the Big Ten and BIG EAST Conferences and named in honor of BIG EAST founder and basketball visionary Dave Gavitt, wrapped up on Friday, Nov. 17 after beginning on Monday, Nov. 13. Gavitt had a profound and lasting influence on the sport of basketball on the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
  • The Gavitt Tipoff Games are played in the first full week of the college basketball season each year. The series will span eight years (2015-22), with games played at home sites.
  • Seven different Big Ten teams received votes in the latest Associated Press (AP) poll. Michigan State tops all teams at No. 2/2 (AP/USA Today), followed by No. 14/15 Minnesota, No 19/21 Purdue and No. 20/20 Northwestern. Maryland, Michigan and Wisconsin received votes in both polls (USA Today released preseason Top 25 poll on Oct. 22).
  • The 2018 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament will be held from Feb. 28-March 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the first time in history. The Big Ten Tournament will return to Chicago in 2019 and 2021 and Indianapolis in 2020 and 2022.
  • The Big Ten welcomes back 21 students that earned All-Big Ten distinction in 2016-17, including Minnesota's Nate Mason and Wisconsin's Ethan Happ, who were first-team selections last season, and Michigan State's Miles Bridges and Northwestern's Bryant McIntosh, who were named second-team All-Big Ten in 2016-17.
  • Seven Big Ten men's basketball students were named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50: Michigan's Moritz Wagner, Minnesota's Nate Mason, Northwestern's Bryant McIntosh, Purdue's Vincent Edwards, Wisconsin's Ethan Happ and Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson Jr. of Michigan State.
  • Michigan State's Miles Bridges and Wisconsin's Ethan Happ were named to the watch lists for the Lute Olson Award and Oscar Robertson Trophy, both of which are presented the nation's player of the year at season's end.
  • The Big Ten returns 26 students that were named Academic All-Big Ten last season, including Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year Nicholas Baer of Iowa, and honorable mention All-Big Ten selections Moritz Wagner of Michigan, and Purdue's Dakota Mathias and P.J. Thompson. Northwestern's Vic Law, a member of the 2016-17 All-Defensive Team, also highlights the conference's returning Academic All-Big Ten honorees.
  • For the week, Big Ten schools have played five teams receiving votes in the latest AP Top 25 poll. A sixth matchup could occur on Sunday should No. 20 Northwestern meet Texas Tech (RV) in the second round of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off.
