Big Ten Men's Basketball Weekly Release - Nov. 25

• Six different Big Ten teams received votes in the latest Associated Press (AP) poll, while seven earned votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll announced on Monday. Michigan State tops all teams at No. 4/5 (AP/USA Today), followed by No. 14/15 Minnesota and No. 18/16 Purdue. Maryland, Michigan and Wisconsin received votes in both polls while Northwestern earned votes in the coaches' poll.

• Three of the top 15 career active assists leaders hail from Big Ten Conference institutions. Northwestern's Bryant McIntosh is the tied for the nation's lead with 586 assists in his career, while Michigan's Jaaron Simmons is tied for sixth on the list with 483 assists and Minnesota's Nate Mason is 14th at 408 assists (through games of Nov. 24).

• The 2018 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will be held from Feb. 28-March 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the first time in history. The Big Ten Tournament will return to Chicago in 2019 and 2021 and Indianapolis in 2020 and 2022.

• Nine Big Ten teams rank in the top 30 in total blocks, including four in the top five. Minnesota leads the nation at 48 blocks this season, Penn State is third with 42, Purdue is fourth with 41 and Nebraska is tied for fifth with 39. Rutgers (t-7th, 37), Maryland (t-13th, 35), Indiana (t-19th, 34), Michigan State (t-19th, 34) and Northwestern (t-26th, 32) round out the top 30 (through games of Nov. 24).


 

 

• The Big Ten welcomes back 21 students that earned All-Big Ten distinction in 2016-17, including Minnesota's Nate Mason and Wisconsin's Ethan Happ, who were first-team selections last season, and Michigan State's Miles Bridges and Northwestern's Bryant McIntosh, who were named second-team All-Big Ten in 2016-17.

• The Big Ten returns 26 students that were named Academic All-Big Ten last season, including Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year Nicholas Baer of Iowa, and honorable mention All-Big Ten selections Moritz Wagner of Michigan, and Purdue's Dakota Mathias and P.J. Thompson. Northwestern's Vic Law, a member of the 2016-17 All-Defensive Team, also highlights the conference's returning Academic All-Big Ten honorees.

• For the week, Big Ten schools will play seven games against top-25 teams in the latest polls. Wisconsin took on No. 22/24 Baylor on Monday and No. 23/23 UCLA on Tuesday, while Penn State played No. 16/19 Texas A&M also on Tuesday. Ohio State played No. 17 Gonzaga on Thursday while Purdue defeated No. 2/4 Arizona on Friday. Minnesota plays No. 25 Alabama on Saturday and Michigan State matches up with No. 9 North Carolina on Sunday night.

• The 19th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge begins on Monday, Nov. 27. All 14 Big Ten teams and all but one ACC member will participate and ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the event. 15 teams competed in the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship: NCAA champion North Carolina; Sweet 16 teams Michigan, Purdue, Wisconsin, as well as early-round participants Duke, Florida State, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
