Big Ten/ACC Challenge
Matchups for the ninth annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge presented by Dish Network will take place this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The event features top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioner's Cup on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. For the third consecutive year, the event will feature 11 games (an increase from nine in the six previous years) from 11 different college campuses and include two telecasts on ESPNU. ESPN and ESPN2 will combine to televise the remaining nine games. This year's schedule is highlighted by the first-ever meeting between basketball powers Wisconsin and Duke, a rematch of last year's Ohio State-North Carolina Challenge game and first-ever Challenge showdowns--Georgia Tech-Indiana, Wake Forest-Iowa, Boston College-Michigan, N.C. State-Michigan State and Virginia Tech-Penn State.
History of the Challenge:
The ACC holds a 48-26* advantage in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, claiming the Commissioner's Cup all eight years. The eight-year records of the Big Ten participants in this annual series are listed below.
And Then There Were Three:
Less than a month into the non-conference season, three Big Ten teams remain undefeated. With a 5-0 mark, Wisconsin is off to its best start since the 1996-97 season when it went 6-0 before suffereing its first defeat. Minnesota and Purdue both boast unblemished records, starting the season 3-0. The last time the Gophers were 3-0 to start was during the 2002-03 season. Purdue's last 3-0 start came during the 2003-04 season.
Minnesota's Tubby Smith remains undefeated in his first year in the Big Ten Conference. Smith is 3-0 as the Gophers have defeated Army and Central Michigan at home and Iowa State in a road contest.
