The 2014 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament returns to Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the ninth time in event history. This year's tournament will tip off on Thursday, March 13, and the champion will be crowned on Sunday, March 16.
The Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament has made its mark both nationally and locally in its 16-year history. Sellout crowds, exciting and competitive games, national television coverage and throngs of media have all been highlights of past conference tournaments. It is a highlight reel of college basketball that showcases the finest coaches and student-athletes in the nation.
Each Big Ten team participates in the men's tournament with the winner receiving the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The team or teams that finish atop the regular-season standings is the Big Ten Champion. The bracket will be seeded according to the final regular-season standings with the conference champion earning the top seed and the top four finishers receiving first-round byes.
Since its inception, the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament has seen six different conference representatives crowned champion. Ohio State leads all schools with four official tournament titles (2007, 2010, 2011, 2013), followed by Michigan State with three crowns (1999, 2000, 2001). Illinois (2003, 2005), Iowa (2001, 2006) and Wisconsin (2004, 2008) have each claimed the honor twice, and Purdue captured the crown in 2009.
Four different networks will again provide national television coverage of the event. BTN will carry the opening two games of the tournament, as well as two primetime contests on Friday. ESPN2 will air Thursday's primetime matchups, while ESPN will carry Friday's afternoon games. CBS Sports will broadcast Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's championship game.
Previous Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournaments have attracted fans in masses. In 17 years, the Big Ten has welcomed more than 1.5 million fans and thousands of media members to the event.
