Wisconsin Wins Season Opener with Central Florida
Sept. 4, 2004
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - John Stocco threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score in his first start for No. 21 Wisconsin, which downed Central Florida 34-6 Saturday. Anthony Davis rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown for the Badgers but left late in the first half after taking a hard hit at the end of a 21-yard run. Before getting hurt, Davis moved into second place on the school's all-time rushing list behind Ron Dayne, college football's career rushing leader. Stocco, a sophomore who replaced the graduated Jim Sorgi, threw touchdown passes of 16 and 52 yards in the Badgers' biggest win in a season opener since whipping Murray State 49-10 in 1999. Dontez Sanders' 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown was called back to midfield when the replay official ruled Sanders had a knee down when quarterback Steven Moffett's fumble bounced into his hands. Stocco hit Jonathan Orr with a 16-yard touchdown pass. Orr's TD gave the Badgers a 17-3 lead with 1:35 left before halftime, and they weren't done. Jim Leonhard's 38-yard punt return with 30 seconds remaining set up Mike Allen's 29-yard field goal as the half expired, putting Wisconsin ahead 20-3. Stocco's 2-yard keeper in the third quarter made it 27-3 and his 52-yard pass to tight end Owen Daniels down the left sideline made it 34-6 in the fourth quarter. Davis accounted for all 52 yards on the Badgers' opening touchdown drive. He ran six times for 40 yards and caught a 12-yard pass on fourth-and-8. He scampered in from 8 yards out for a 7-0 lead. Matt Prater accounted for the Knights' scoring with field goals of 51 and 33 yards.
