Fifteen Big Ten standouts were named to the Butkus and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists today, with Michigan’s Jake Ryan named to both lists. The Butkus Award is won by the country’s top linebacker while the Rotary Lombardi Award goes to the nation’s most outstanding offensive or defensive lineman or linebacker.

Five Big Ten linebackers were tabbed for the Butkus Award watch list – Illinois’ Mason Monheim, Maryland’s Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil, Michigan’s Ryan, Michigan State’s Taiwan Jones and Penn State’s Mike Hull. The award is named for former Illini linebacker and Hall of Famer Dick Butkus. Ohio State’s Ryan Shazier was named a finalist for the award last season. Linebackers from Big Ten schools have earned the Butkus Award 10 times, most recently by Ohio State’s James Laurinaitis in 2007.

Eleven Big Ten standouts were named to the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list – Iowa’s Austin Blythe, Carl Davis and Brandon Scherff, Michigan’s Ryan, Michigan State’s Shilique Calhoun, Nebraska’s Randy Gregory, Northwestern’s Chi Chi Ariguzo, Ohio State’s Michael Bennett and Joey Bosa, Rutgers’ Kaleb Johnson and Wisconsin’s Rob Havenstein. Fourteen linemen from current Big Ten schools have claimed the Rotary Lombardi Award 15 times, most recently by Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh in 2009.
