Butkus and Hornung Award Watch Lists

Fourteen Big Ten Conference students are appearing on the 2017 preseason watch lists for the Butkus Award (given annually to the nation’s top linebacker) and the Paul Hornung Award (presented each year to the country’s most versatile college football player), according to Monday’s announcements by the Butkus Foundation and Louisville Sports Commission, respectively.
Nine Big Ten students have been named to this year’s Butkus Award preseason watch list. The featured conference standouts include Indiana’s Tegray Scales, Iowa’s Josey Jewell, Maryland’s Jermaine Carter Jr., Michigan’s Mike McCray, Ohio State’s Jerome Baker and Chris Worley, Penn State’s Jason Cabinda, and Wisconsin’s Jack Cichy and T.J. Edwards. Ten Butkus Award recipients have matriculated from current Big Ten schools since the award debuted in 1985, with Ohio State’s James Laurinaitis being the most recent Big Ten honoree in 2007. Five Big Ten students are part on this year’s Hornung Award preseason watch list. That collection of conference honorees includes Indiana’s Devonte Williams, Maryland’s D.J. Moore, Nebraska’s De’Mornay Pierson-El, Ohio State’s Parris Campbell and Rutgers’ Janarion Grant. Last year, Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers became the first student from a current Big Ten school to earn the Hornung Award since it was first presented in 2010. (FULL LIST)
