Wisconsin 26, Northern Iowa 21: Montee Ball rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, and No. 12 Wisconsin needed a big defensive play to survive a fourth-quarter scare from Northern Iowa in a 26-21 victory Saturday.

Nebraska 49, Southern Mississippi 20: Taylor Martinez threw for a career-high 354 yards and matched his high with five touchdown passes to lead No. 17 Nebraska to a 49-20 victory over Southern Mississippi on Saturday. The Huskers won their nation-leading 27th straight opener.

Purdue 48, Eastern Kentucky 6: Robert Marve passed for a career-high 295 yards and matched a career best with three touchdowns to help Purdue defeat Eastern Kentucky 48-6 on Saturday in both teams' season opener. He hadn't thrown three touchdowns since 2008, when he was the starter at Miami.

Iowa 18, Northern Iowa 17: Damon Bullock ran for 150 yards and scored on a late 23-yard touchdown run to lead Iowa to an 18-17 victory over Northern Illinois in the season opener on Saturday. The Hawkeyes simply got all they could handle from the reigning Mid-American Conference champions but came out on top after trailing most of the way.

Northwestern 42, Syracuse 41: Northwestern took the lead in the final minute and held on to take home a 42-41 win over Syracuse. With 44 seconds to go, Trevor Siemian found Demetrius Fields open for a nine-yard touchdown pass to give the Wildcats the lead, 42-41. The Orange closed the gap to 35-27 when Ryan Nassib threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Kobena to clinch a 91-yard drive.

Ohio State 56, Miami (Ohio) 10: Braxton Miller rushed for 165 yards, a record for an Ohio State quarterback, and threw for two scores including Devin Smith's highlight-reel, one-handed catch as the 18th-ranked Buckeyes ushered in the Urban Meyer era on Saturday with a 56-10 win over Miami (Ohio). Meyer, who won two national titles at Florida, moved to 11-0 in season-openers.

Illinois 24, Western Michigan 7: With quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase injured, Ashante Williams returned an interception 60 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown to help Illinois and new coach Tim Beckman hang on for a 24-7 win Saturday over Western Michigan in the season opener for both teams.

Ohio 24, Penn State 14: Penn State coach Bill O'Brien led the charge in the first home opener without Joe Paterno since 1949, his players behind him, storming the Beaver Stadium field as more than 97,000 fans kicked off a new chapter in the program's tarnished history with a raucous and sustained ovation. But the Nittany Lions wore down in the second half, and Ohio, from the Mid-American Conference, upset Penn State, 24-14.

Minnesota 30, UNLV 27 (3OT): MarQueis Gray threw two touchdown passes to John Rabe in overtime, and Jordan Wettstein hit a 32-yard field goal in the third extra session to lift Minnesota over UNLV 30-27 Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

Wettstein's field goal was set up by Derrick Wells` second interception against redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Sherry. In the second overtime, Sherry threw a 6-yard TD pass to Devante Davis on fourth down to tie it at 27-27.
