Big Ten Teams Record Strong Start to 2010 Football Season

Ohio State 45, Marshall 7: Terrelle Pryor tossed three touchdown passes, Brandon Saine rushed for 103 yards and two scores and No. 2 Ohio State rolled over error-prone Marshall 45-7 on Thursday night in a tuneup for a big date with Miami.

Pryor completed 17 of 25 passes for 247 yards and TDs covering 6 and 11 yards to DeVier Posey and 65 yards to Dane Sanzenbacher before 105,040 at Ohio Stadium.

Indiana 51, Towson 17: Darius Willis ran for two touchdowns and Ben Chappell threw for two more - all in the first half - as Indiana routed Towson 51-17 on Thursday.

Bill Lynch improved to 4-0 in home openers as the Hoosiers coach.

Minnesota 24, MTSU 17: Duane Bennett rushed for a career-high 187 yards and Jon Hoese scored three touchdowns just days after deciding to make the trip to lead Minnesota to a grinding season-opening 24-17 win over Middle Tennessee on Thursday night.

Bennett becomes the first 100-yard rusher for the Gophers since 2008 and dominated the Blue Raiders over Minnesota's two game-clinching drives. He rushed for 64 yards as the Gophers held the ball for 15:41 on their way to a field goal and Hoese's 1-yard dive with 3:09 left.

Michigan State 38, Western Michigan 14: Freshman Le'Veon Bell rushed for 141 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns to spark Michigan State past Western Michigan 38-14 in a season-opening game Saturday.

Bell's 75-yard run was the key play in a scoring drive that gave the Spartans a 21-7 lead in the second quarter. He followed it up with touchdown runs of 2 yards in the second quarter and 18 yards in the third quarter to put Michigan State ahead 35-7.

Penn State 44, Youngstown State 14: Rob Bolden stood tall in the pocket, displayed a rocket arm and made some clutch throws - a promising debut for the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener in coach Joe Paterno's 45 years on the sideline at Penn State.

Bolden passed for 239 yards and two touchdowns, Chaz Powell tiptoed down the sideline on a 100-yard kickoff return to open the second half and the 19th-ranked Nittany Lions routed FCS school Youngstown State 44-14 on Saturday.

Iowa 37, Eastern Illinois 7: Adam Robinson ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns in the first half and No. 9 Iowa breezed past Eastern Illinois 37-7.

Senior Ricky Stanzi threw for 229 yards and a touchdown for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who won their 10th straight season opener under coach Kirk Ferentz.

Missouri 23, Illinois 13: Blaine Gabbert rallied Missouri from a 10-point halftime deficit with two touchdown passes and Carl Gettis made a leaping one-handed interception and downed a punt at the 1 in the fourth quarter of an opening 23-13 victory over Illinois on Saturday.

T.J. Moe had 13 receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown, and the Tigers' defense shut out Illinois in the second half. Kenji Jackson also intercepted Nathan Scheelhaase in the fourth quarter to help seal it for Missouri, which finished the neutral-site Arch Rivalry series with six straight victories.

Michigan 30, Connecticut 10: Connecticut tried everything to stop Denard Robinson, including ripping off his shoes. Nothing worked.

Robinson accounted for 383 yards and two touchdowns in his first game as Michigan's starting quarterback, leading the Wolverines to a 30-10 win over UConn on Saturday at the bigger-than-ever Big House.

Notre Dame 23, Purdue 12: Brian Kelly looked around at a packed stadium and saw - fittingly enough - a sea of kelly green shirts.

On a day of firsts for Notre Dame's new head coach, highlighted by a 23-12 win over Purdue, the colorful and enthusiastic crowd stood out. They were actually rooting for his team.

Northwestern 23, Vanderbilt 21:Dan Persa threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers, and Northwestern beat Vanderbilt 23-15 Saturday night in the regular season game between the Big Ten and the Southeastern Conference.

This was Persa's first start with Mike Kafka now gone, and the junior was nearly perfect as he helped ruin the debut of Vanderbilt's new head coach Robbie Caldwell in the season opener for both teams.

Wisconsin 41, UNLV 21: John Clay and Monte Hall each ran for two touchdowns to lead No. 12 Wisconsin past UNLV 41-21 on Saturday night.

Clay finished with 123 yards on 17 carries and Hall had 79 on 16 rushes. The Badgers outscored the Rebels 24-0 in the third quarter after leading 17-14 at half.
