Sept. 5, 2005
OFFENSE:
Brian Calhoun, Wisconsin JR, RB, Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek
In his first game in a Wisconsin uniform, Calhoun exploded for 258 rushing yards on 43 carries and tied a school record with five touchdowns to carry the Badgers past Bowling Green, 56-42. The junior running back, who established career bests in rushing attempts, yards and touchdowns, also added a 39-yard reception to pile up 297 all-purpose yards on the day. The transfer from Colorado saw his first game action since the 2003 campaign and became the 12th player in school annals to rush for at least 200 yards in a game. Calhoun's 258-yard effort ranks eighth on the school's single-game list and his 43 attempts place him in a tie for fourth in the school records. In addition, his five touchdowns rank fourth in Big Ten history and match the program best set by Billy Marek in 1974 and equaled by Anthony Davis in 2002.
DEFENSE:
John Pannozzo, Indiana SR, LB, Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day
In his first game since making the transition from the fullback position he played in 2004, Pannozzo racked up three tackles for loss, including a 14-yard sack, and forced a fumble as Indiana held on for a 20-13 road victory at Central Michigan in the first game under new head coach Terry Hoeppner. The senior linebacker tallied six solo defensive stops in the game as his three tackles for loss totaled 19 yards. This is the first weekly conference honor of Pannozzo's career and the first for a Hoosier since Herana-Daze Jones was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13, 2004.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Jeremy Kapinos, Penn State JR, P, Springfield, Va./West Springfield
Kapinos place three of his five punts inside the 20-yard line and averaged 42.2 yards per boot as Penn State defeated South Florida. The junior punter totaled 211 yards on his five punts, including a 60-yard effort, the third-longest kick of his career. Kapinos watched as three of his punts were downed or sent out of bounds at the 11-yard line, seven-yard line and four-yard line. This marks the second weekly accolade of his career after he was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 30, 2004.
