Big Ten Announces Weekly Football Players of the Week

Penn State's Michael Mauti was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Co-Offensive Players of the Week
Taylor Martinez, Nebraska
Jr., QB, Corona, Calif./Centennial
• Totaled 288 yards of total offense and helped Nebraska rally from a 17-point second-half deficit to defeat Wisconsin on Saturday
• Threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 107 more and a touchdown
• Had a hand in three straight Nebraska touchdowns, completing a 3-yard pass to Rex Burkhead in the second quarter, rushing for a 38-yarder and converting on a 10-yard strike to Kyler Reed in the third quarter
• Wins his third career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award and second this season

Kain Colter, Northwestern
Jr., QB, Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek
• Finished with 297 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, helping Northwestern to a win over Indiana on Saturday and a 5-0 start to the season
• Scored all four touchdowns on the ground, rushing for 164 yards on 14 carries, and caught nine passes for 131 yards as part of Northwestern’s record 704 yards of total offense.
• Scored on touchdown runs of eight, eight, 15 and 22 yards, scoring once in each quarter
• Claims his second career Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor, and first this season

Defensive of the Week
Michael Mauti, Penn State
Sr., LB, Mandeville, La./Mandeville
• Finished with six tackles and two interceptions as part of a Penn State defensive effort that held Illinois to seven points on Saturday
• Intercepted his first pass at the goal line, returning it 99 yards to the Illinois one-yard line to keep the Illini off the scoreboard at the end of the first half
• Picked off his second pass of the day in the third quarter, setting up Penn State’s final touchdown drive
• Wins the third weekly award of his career and second this season

Special Teams Player of the Week
Brett Maher, Nebraska
Sr., P/K, Kearney, Neb./Kearney
• Kicked the game-tying field goal in the third quarter and the game-winning field in the fourth quarter to give Nebraska a 30-27 victory over Wisconsin
• Was 3-for-4 on field goal attempts and converted on all three extra points
• Had three punts for 140 yards, an average of 46.7, and one punt inside the 20 in which he pinned Wisconsin at its own 10-yard line for its final drive
• Wins his fourth Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week award

Mason Monheim, Illinois
