The Big Ten placed three teams among the top 12 in the third issue of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings which were released today, a total that equals the ACC and SEC for the national lead. All teams with nine regular-season wins that rank among the top 12 in the final BCS standings are eligible for the two at-large spots in BCS bowls. Penn State continues to lead the way for the conference at No. 7 overall, followed by No. 10 Ohio State, No. 12 Wisconsin and No. 21 Michigan.
Big Ten co-leader Penn State (8-1, 5-1 in Big Ten) rose two spots to No. 7 overall after a victory over Purdue (2-6, 0-5) and will host fellow conference leader Wisconsin (8-1, 5-1), which held steady at No. 12 in the BCS poll following a road win at Illinois (2-6, 0-5). Ohio State (6-2, 4-1) passed the Badgers in the BCS standing, climbing three spots to No. 10 overall after a road triumph at Minnesota (5-3, 2-3). The Buckeyes will host the Fighting Illini on Saturday. Michigan (6-3, 4-2) was also on the move, jumping up four spots to No. 21 overall after a win at Northwestern on Saturday. The Wolverines have a bye this weekend before returning to action at home against Indiana (4-4, 1-4) on Nov. 12.
The BCS rankings will be announced each Monday through Nov. 28 and the final BCS poll will be announced on Sunday, Dec. 4. The teams ranked No. 1 and 2 in the final BCS standings will meet for the national championship in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 4. If a Big Ten team is not ranked No. 1 or 2 in the final BCS poll, the conference champion (or co-champion as designated by the Big Ten tie-breaking procedures) will play in the Fiesta, Orange or Sugar Bowl.
