ROSEMONT, Ill. – With its final match with Purdue tied at 2-2-1, the Michigan men’s golf team won a sudden-death playoff to claim its first Big Ten Match Play Championship on Saturday at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The two-day event featured all 12 Big Ten squads, with the Wolverines posting an 11-7-2 record during the competition.
Michigan defeated Michigan State 3-2-0 in the first round, posted a 3-2-0 win over Illinois in the quarterfinals and followed with a 3-1-1 triumph over Iowa in the semifinals to advance to the championship round.
The Boilermakers placed second at the match play event, Northwestern finished third, the Hawkeyes were fourth and Minnesota rounded out the top five in the final team standings.
BTN will broadcast the 2014 Big Ten Match Play Championship via tape delay on Sunday, March 16. The 90-minute program will air at a time to be determined.
