2012 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships Release

The 2012 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships, hosted by French Lick Resort, are set to take place this weekend at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Ind. The first and second rounds of the championships are set for Friday beginning at 8 a.m. ET, with the second round following at 1 p.m. Saturday’s third round begins at 9 a.m., while the final round is slated for 8 a.m. on Sunday. Seven of the top 10 finishers in the 2011 Big Ten Championships, including the tournament’s individual medalist, Luke Guthrie of Illinois, return for this year’s event. Illinois returns two top-20 finishers from 2011, as Guthrie (first) and Thomas Pieters (T-11th) look to help the Illini earn their fourth-straight Big Ten title. Northwestern looks to build on last year’s second-place finish, returning 13th-place finisher Eric Chun. Second-place finisher Chris Brant returns for Iowa, which finished third in 2011, while Ohio State welcomes back Chase Wright (5th) from last year’s fifth-place squad. Minnesota’s Erik Van Rooyen (4th), Michigan State’s Chris Mory (T-5th), Penn State’s Jay Woodward (9th) and Purdue’s Adam Schenk (10th) also return for 2012. Four Big Ten teams hold top-50 Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings entering the weekend, led by No. 25 Iowa. Illinois ranks 34th nationally, while Indiana stands at No. 37 and Purdue holds No. 48. The Fighting Illini’s Guthrie ranks among the top 15 in the country individually, sitting at No. 13. Iowa’s Barrett Kelpin (29th), Northwestern’s Chun (44th) and the Fighting Illini’s Pieters (50th) rank in nation’s top 50.
