Lake Forest, Ill. - As winds increased through the afternoon at the 2006 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships so did the Northwestern Wildcats' team standing. NU, who entered the championships as the No. 1 seed finished the first round in second place behind Michigan State with a score of 282. In the second round the tables turned as the Wildcats overtook the Spartans with an even-par 568 (282-286) to sit atop the leaderboard by just one stroke.
Purdue remains in third place with a 2-over-par 570 (284-286). Indiana, who was tied with Illinois for fourth place after round one, pulled away during the afternoon session to claim sole possession of the No. 4 spot. The Hoosiers shot a 4-over 288 in the second round to add to their 1-over 285 performance in the morning for a combined 5-over 573 at the halfway point. Illinois sits seven strokes behind IU in fifth place with a 580.
Minnesota (288-294-582) is in sixth, followed by Wisconsin (291-296-592) and Penn State (293-299-592). Iowa (296-310-606) is ninth while Ohio State (302-309-611) and Michigan (308-305-613) round out the field of competition.
Michigan State's Ryan Brehm maintained his lead in the afternoon round with a 1-over 72 after a record-setting 7-under 64 performance in the first round. The sophomore set a new collegiate course record and tied league marks for lowest individual round and lowest first round during the morning session. Despite recording only three birdies in the second round, Brehm was able to fight off strong charges from Northwestern's Kyle Moore and Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul as both are tied for second after two rounds. Brehm will begin the third round tomorrow at 6-under 136 (64-72).
Moore, also recorded a 1-over 72 during the second round after finishing in second place with a 6-under 65 in morning. Junhasavasdikul, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, fired a second-round 5-under 66, improving 5 strokes from his even-par first-round performance, highlighted by an eagle on the 14th hole, the longest of the entire course at 585 yards. Both Junhasavasdikul (71-66) and Moore (65-72) have tallied a 5-under 137 after two rounds of play.
Indiana's Seth Brandon dropped one spot from the third-place position he held after round one. In the afternoon, Brandon fired a 2-over 73, just one stroke behind Brehm and Moore's second-round marks. Combined with his 5-over 66 in the morning, the freshman has tallied an overall score of 3-under 139 (66-73) through two rounds.
Spartan sophomore Matt Harmon and junior Wildcat Chris Wilson round out the top-five at the halfway mark of the 2006 Big Ten Championships as both are tied for fifth. Joining teammate Brehm in helping MSU defend its league title from a year ago, Harmon shot an even-par 71 in the second round to add to his 2-under 69 from the morning for a 2-under 140 (69-71) after two rounds. Wilson duplicated his first-round mark with a 1-under 70 in the afternoon.
The action continues tomorrow at Conway Farms Golf Course (par 71, 7,168) and will consist of 18 holes with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. CT.
