Illinois and Purdue Advance to NCAA Men's Golf Championships

Illinois and Purdue advanced to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. The Fighting Illini won the Sugar Grove Regional with a three-round score of 16-over 880, followed by third-place Purdue with a score of 894. Illinois' Brian Campbell was the individual champion, carding a 5-under 211. The national event will be held May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

Through the second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Purdue all sit among the top ten at their respective events. In the Sugar Grove Regional, Illinois is currently in second place with a score of 9-over 585, while Purdue is in sixth place with a score of 597. In the Columbia Regional, Iowa sits in eighth with a team score of 9-over 585, followed by Ohio State in 13th with a score of 611. Minnesota is tied for 6th (573) in the Raleigh Regional, while Northwestern is in 13th place in the San Antonio Regional with a score of 602.

The final round of play will get underway Saturday morning.

Through the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, Illinois, Iowa and Purdue all sit among the top 10 at their respective events. In the Columbia Regional, the Hawkeyes are tied for sixth with a score of 3-over 291, followed by 12th-place Ohio State (308). In the Sugar Grove Regional, the Fighting Illini sit in second with a score of 5-over 293, followed by Purdue in ninth place (309). Northwestern is in 11th at the San Antonio Regional with a score of 11-over 299. Minnesota sits in 8th at the Raleigh Regional, where play was halted due to weather. The first round will resume at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

The second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals continue Friday morning.


Six Big Ten teams and one individual travel to the 2014 NCAA Men's Golf Regionals today seeking a berth to the NCAA Championships. The regional field is divided among six sites and will be held May 15-17. Five teams and one individual not on a qualifying team will advance from each regional to the national event, which will be held May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

Sixth-seeded Iowa and 11th-seeded Ohio State will compete at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo., while 10th-seeded Northwestern will head to Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas. Second-seeded Illinois and eighth-seeded Purdue will travel to Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., and will be joined by Michigan's Chris O'Neill as an individual competitor. Minnesota earned the Big Ten's automatic bid after winning the Big Ten Championship and is the 11th-seed at Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh, N.C.
