Six Big Ten teams opened play at the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Championships on Thursday with three conference teams in the top five of their respective regionals.

After round one at the Central Regional in South Bend, Ind., Northwestern is tied for fifth place after shooting a four-over par 284, one stroke ahead of Big Ten counterparts Michigan and Indiana, who are tied for seventh place. Iowa is ninth with an eight-over par 288. Individually, Michigan’s Alexander Sitompul is atop the leaderboard at four-under par 66, while Northwestern’s Josh Dupont is in a four-way tie for second at three-under par.

In the East Regional in New Haven, Conn., Penn State is second in the team standings with a three-under par 277, three strokes back of Texas. Kevin Foley was the top performer for the Nittany Lions on Day 1 and is in a tied for fourth with a three-under par 67, three strokes back of the leader.

Over in the West Regional, Illinois finds itself in fourth place in the team standings after shooting a five-over par 293, seven strokes off the pace set by the host Washington Huskies. Luke Guthrie led the Illini on Thursday, finishing at two-under par to and tied for third on the individual leaderboard.

The conference teams will resume action at their respective NCAA Regional Championships sites at 8 a.m. local time.
