Illinois Falls to Stanford in Match Play

Illinois fell to Stanford, 3-2, in quarterfinal match play of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships. In a back-and-forth battle that was all square through 16 holes, the Fighting Illini's Alex Burge finished 1-down to Stanford's Cameron Wilson, who claimed the NCAA individual title on Monday. This marked Illinois' third appearance in the match-play portion of the NCAA Championships in the last four seasons.

Quarterfinal Match Play Underway for Illinois

Illinois' quarterfinal match play versus Stanford at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships is underway at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The Fighting Illini advanced to the match play championship after finishing in a seventh-place tie following the 54-hole stroke-play portion of the event. Illinois is making its third appearance in the match-play portion of the NCAA Championships in the last four seasons, also advancing in 2013 and 2011.

Illinois Advances to NCAA Match Play Championship

Illinois finished the stroke-play portion of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in a seventh-place tie, advancing to the eight-team match play championship segment at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The Fighting Illini will face Stanford on Tuesday at 8:50 a.m. ET. The Golf Channel will carry live coverage of the semifinals and finals of team match play.

Illinois' Brian Campbell finished ninth on the individual leaderboard after firing a final-round score of 7-under par 63.

Third Round of NCAA Men's Golf Championships Underway

The third round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships is underway at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Heading into the third round, Illinois sits in 10th place with a team score of 5-over par 565. The Fighting Illini's Thomas Detry fired a 5-under par 65, the best round ever by an Illini at the NCAA Championships. Purdue enters the third round in 25th place with a team score of 25-over par 585.

Illinois Among Top 10 After Two Rounds

Through two rounds of play, Illinois currently sits in 10th place, while Purdue is in 25th place. Round three has been suspended due to lightning. Play will resume Monday morning.


Weather Forces Illinois and Purdue to Continue Tomorrow

The second round of play has been suspended, forcing Illinois to continue its round at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday. Purdue will tee off at 9:40 ET on Sunday for its second round.


First Round of NCAA Men's Golf Championships Complete

Through the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, Illinois sits in 19th place and Purdue is in 21st place. The Fighting Illini finished the round with a 5-over par 285 and were led by Brian Campbell and Charlie Danielson with a pair of even-par rounds. The Boilermakers shot a 6-over par 286 to sit in 21st place.

Illinois' second round is currently underway. Purdue will begin its second round Sunday morning at 9:40 ET.

Illinois and Purdue to Compete for National Title

Illinois and Purdue will represent the Big Ten at the 2014 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, which will run through next Wednesday (May 23-28) at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The Fighting Illini won the Sugar Grove Regional last weekend, while Purdue finished third. Illinois’ Brian Campbell was the individual champion of the regional after carding a three-round score of 5-under par 211 (69-70-72).   

The NCAA Men’s Golf Championships feature 54 holes from Friday through Sunday. Following the 54-hole competition, the top 40 players will advance for one additional day of stroke play next Monday to determine a 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams after 54 holes of play will advance to match play competition, which will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Live results from the event can be found at NCAA.com and bigten.org. The Golf Channel will carry live coverage from next Monday through Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. ET. Monday’s coverage will feature the championship round of individual stroke play. Tuesday and Wednesday’s broadcast will feature the semifinals and finals of team match play.
