Six Men's Golf Squads Conclude Play at Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge

BANDON, Ore. -  The top-six Big Ten men's golf teams from a year ago completed play in the third-annual Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge on Tuesday, which was held at Pacific Dunes (Par 71, 6,633 yards) in Bandon, Ore.  Wisconsin (300-296-298) finished third overall at 894, followed closely by defending conference champion Northwestern (300-306-292) in fourth at 898. 

UCLA (284-310-291) captured the team title with an 885, while USC (295-305-290) finished second at 890.  In the conference challenge portion of the tournament, which features each conference's top-six squads from the previous year, the Pac-10 defeated the Big Ten, 4,488-4,517, to take a 2-1 lead in the annual competition.

Stanford (294-306-300) was fifth at 900, seven shots better than Michigan State, which led a tightly-bunched group in the next four spots. The Spartans (296-314-297) took sixth at 907, followed by Minnesota (308-304-297) at 909, Washington (300-302-308) at 910 and Oregon (305-314-292) at 911. Indiana (312-304-302--918), Oregon State (305-323-300--928) and Illinois (303-322-307--932) rounded out the 12-team field in the 54-hole event.

Individually, Wisconsin junior Jeff Kaiser (75-70-73) placed third overall at 5-over-par 218, four shots ahead of fourth-place finisher Jonathan Bowers (74-73-75) of Northwestern at 222.  Indiana's Jorge Campillo (75-76-73), the conference's reigning Freshman of the Year, joined a six-person tie for fifth overall at 224. 

The tournament committee established the rotation for the next three Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenges on Tuesday as well. The 2007 event will be held at Bandon's Pacific Trails Course, while the 2008 tournament will shift back to the Glen Club, the site of the 2005 Challenge, in Glenview, Ill.  The 2009 Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge will return to the Bandon Dunes Golf Course for the first time since the inaugural event was held there in 2004.
