TACOMA Wash. - Four Big Ten Men's golf teams concluded play at the fourth-annual Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge on Monday, which was held at Chambers Bay Golf Course (Par 72, 7,471 yards) in Tacoma, Washington. The Pac-10 narrowly defeated the Big Ten by a single point 30.5 to 29.5.
Last year's Big Ten Co-Champion Michigan State (293-304-288) finished second overall at 885, followed closely by Northwestern in third place (299-298-294) at 891.
UCLA (294-287-298--879) endured a final round surge by the Spartans to capture the team title for the second straight year. Oregon (295-293-304--892) was surpassed by the wildcats in the final round to finish fourth.
Last season's other Big Ten Co-Champion Minnesota (296-295-305) finished fifth overall with 896 points, tightly trailed by Washington (301-297-300--898). Oregon State (300-304-303--907) and Wisconsin (316-297-309--922) finished at seventh and eighth, respectively.
MSU senior Ryan Brehm took home top individual honors by firing the low round of the day on Monday at 5-under 67 mounting a come back to finish 6-under 210. The Minnesota tandem of Clayton Risk (73-73-73--219) and Andy Paulson (75-71-74--220) were the next Big Ten student-athletes to place at sixth and seventh, respectively.
The Pac-10 leads the all-time conference challenge series at 3-1. To witness this year's Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, the Big Ten Network will air tournament coverage and a recap show on Nov. 4 at 4 p.m., Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. and Nov. 9 at 10 a.m.
The Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge will be coming back to the Midwest in 2008, as the event will be held in Glenview, Ill. at the Glen Club golf course, the site of the 2005 event.
