Newman led the Fighting Illini to a 221.825-221.350 victory over defending NCAA champion Penn State last week. He captured the pommel horse title (9.750), while also notching a third-place showing on the rings with a career-high score of 9.700. Newman earns his first-ever Big Ten weekly laurel and is the first Illini to claim Gymnast of the Week honors since teammate Justin Spring won back-to-back accolades last season on March 2 and March 9, 2004.
Guillermo Alvarez, Minnesota

Alvarez posted a career-best score of 55.400 while leading Minnesota to an upset victory over No. 3 Michigan last weekend. Alvarez captured individual titles on floor exercise (9.625), pommel horse (9.650) and vault (9.500). He also took third on the parallel bars (8.775), while finishing among the top five in still rings (8.850) and high bar (9.000). Alvarez claims his second consecutive and fourth all-time Conference Gymnast of the Week accolade.
