March 9, 2009

Gymnast of the Week:
Miguel Pineda, Penn State
Fr. - Galloway, Ohio - Hilliard Darby

Competing in the all-around twice within the span of three days, Penn State freshman Miguel Pineda earned seven top-three finishes, including two still rings titles and his first career all-around crown last week. His performances also helped his Nittany Lion squad to two first place team finishes on the week. Against Temple on Friday, Pineda claimed top honors the still rings (14.850) and placed second in the pommel horse (13.900) and tied for third in the parallel bars (14.200) en route to taking the all-around with a season-high score of 85.300. On Sunday, in a tri-meet with William & Mary and Navy, the Galloway, Ohio native bested or tied his scores from Friday in every event to place second in the all-around. His total of 86.750 broke his collegiate personal best established just two days earlier. Pineda won his second straight still rings title and the sixth of his inaugural campaign with a 15.050 mark, one of team’s top scores so far this season. This marks the first weekly laurel for Pineda.
