Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Off and Running

The 2010 season of Indoor Track and Field is set to begin this weekend with eight Big Ten men’s teams in action across the conference landscape.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will play host in the opening weekend of competition at the Buckeye Classic on Saturday, Jan. 9 in the newly renovated French Fieldhouse. Meanwhile, Iowa will go on the road for a dual meet against Illinois. The event will take place at the U of I Armory Track & Floor, with field events slated to begin at Noon CT and running events to begin at 1 p.m.

Indiana’s 2010 campaign also begins Saturday as the Hoosiers make ready to host the Indiana Open in what will be the first of four straight home meets for IU. 

The 2009 Big Ten runner-up Michigan Wolverines open the year at the Eastern Michigan Invitational, held at the Bob Parks Track/Bowen Fieldhouse in Ypsilanti, Mich. Competition for the event is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Penn State and Purdue are also set to host in the opening weekend of the 2010 season. The Nittany Lions will entertain competition at the Penn State Indoor Relays, scheduled for Saturday at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. That same day, the Boilermakers will take part in the Purdue Invitational with events slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET. 

Rounding out the pack of Big Ten teams in action this weekend is 2010 Big Ten Indoor Championships host Minnesota. The Golden Gophers earned a No. 10 ranking in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason indoor poll and will begin its defense of its 2009 Big Ten indoor title when it opens competition on Saturday at the Northwest Open in Minneapolis, Minn.

Michigan State and Wisconsin will begin their seasons the following weekend on January 15. The Spartans will travel to compete at the Kentucky Invite while the No. 24-ranked Badgers enter the 2010 campaign by playing host to the Badger Quad at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center for a two-day event.
