Feb. 2, 2009

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week

Ibrahim Kabia, Minnesota
Sr., Brooklyn Center, Minn. / Champlin Park

At the Nebraska adidas Classic, Minnesota’s Kabia out-leaned Florida State’s Maurice Mitchell at the tape in the finals of the 60 meters to win gold.  His blistering time of 6.65 is just two one-hundredths of a second (0.02) off his school record as the senior earns an NCAA provisional mark.  Kabia owns the nation’s second-fastest 60-meter time of 6.64 which he ran two weeks ago at the Minnesota Open.  The award is Kabia’s second this season and fourth of his career.

Last Minnesota Indoor Track Athlete of the Week: Chris Rombough (1-26-09)

Jeff Coover, Indiana
Sr., LaJolla, Calif. / LaJolla

Coover cleared an NCAA provisional mark of 17-7.25 (5.37m.) in the pole vault this past weekend at the Indiana Relays.  His first-place jump was a season-best and currently ranks first in the conference and third in the nation.  Coover moved into a tie for fourth all-time in the Indiana record books in the event.  The California native earns his first career weekly indoor honor.
