Purdue and Ohio State Collect Weekly Indoor Track and Field Awards

The conference office announced on Monday the seventh weekly men’s indoor track and field awards for meets through February 15-21. Purdue’s Mike Willey and Ohio State’s Matt DeChant garnered Track and Field Athlete of the Week laurels, respectively, for their efforts in the final tune up before the Big Ten Championships last week.  

Track Athlete of the Week:

Purdue sophomore Mike Willey turned in a pair of outstanding times at the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.79 and taking fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in a personal-record of 8.12 in the preliminaries. Willey's 200-meter mark is the fastest in the Big Ten this season, while his hurdle mark is one hundredth of a second shy of the conference’s top-10. The selection marks the first weekly honor for Mike Willey’s career.

Field Athlete of the Week:
Matt DeChant, Ohio State

Matt DeChant led Ohio State Friday at the Buckeye Tune-up, posting two personal records and NCAA provisional marks inside French Field House. The sophomore crushed his previous career best in the shot put with a first-place toss of 18.56m, the sixth-best in Ohio State indoor history, third-best in the Big Ten and No. 12 on the Division I performance list. He followed that up with a first-place finish in the weight throw at 19.88 meters, second-best in the conference and a Top 25 mark nationally. This is the first weekly award for Matt DeChant and the first field accolade for a Buckeye this season.
