March 1, 2006
The Big Ten office announced the 2006 All-Big Ten men's indoor track and field teams, as well as individual award winners today. Wisconsin's Chris Solinsky was selected as Athlete of the Year and of the Championships while Illinois' Dominique Worsley earned the Freshman of the Year title. Wisconsin's Ed Nuttycombe was named Coach of the Year for the fourth-consecutive season.
Solinsky helped UW claim its sixth-straight Big Ten Championships as the junior swept the individual honors for upperclassmen and was named to his first All-Conference team. He commanded the distance events as he finished first in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter run with times of 7:54.73 and 13:52.34, respectively. Worsley is the first Illini to garner Freshman of the Year accolades since Jason Van Swol earned the award in 1999. The Manchester, N.H., native, finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.75. He went on to take second place to defending Big Ten champion David Neville in the 200-meter dash as Worsley crossed the finish line just .10 second behind Neville.
For Nuttycombe, this marks the eighth league coaching honor of his career. He has led the Badgers to 10 Big Ten Championships and has produced 74 All-Conference honorees in 23 years at Wisconsin. Among the 2006 All-Big Ten selections, 12 return from last year's first and second team squads.
