Big Ten Announces Men's Indoor Individual Honorees

March 1, 2011

The Big Ten Conference office announced on Tuesday the 2011 All-Big Ten men's indoor track and field teams and individual award winners. Highlighting the list, Indiana sophomore Andrew Bayer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year and Indiana junior Derek Drouin earned the nod as Field Athlete of the Year. Wisconsin's Jay Cato was tabbed Freshman of the Year by the conference coaches while Minnesota head coach Steve Plasencia was named Coach of the Year by his peers. The conference coaches also recognized a pair of student-athletes for their performances at this year's Big Ten Indoor Championships as Bayer and Drouin took home Track and Field Athlete of the Championships laurels, respectively.

The conference also announced All-Big Ten first and second teams at the conclusion of the championships on Sunday. The complete list of individual honorees and all-conference teams are listed below.

The Big Ten Conference office recognizes student-athletes from each team with the Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen were individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Honorees for men's indoor track and field are, Illinois's Azeez Shogbuyi, Indiana's Devin Pipkin, Iowa's Chris Barton, Michigan's Carl Buchanon, Michigan State's Spencer Beatty, Minnesota's John Holton, Ohio State's Mike Hartfield, Penn State's Chris Cipro, Purdue's Jacob Palmer and Wisconsin's Zach Mellon. These eleven student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
