Illinois and Michigan State Earn First Weekly Awards of the Season

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week Gakologelwang Masheto, Illinois Sr., Muan, Botswana / University of Botswana Masheto racked up two first-place finishes in his senior season debut at the Saluki Fast Start last Friday. The 2008 Olympian broke the tape in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.30, bettering second place by over a second. He also anchored the winning 4X400m. relay, posting a 3:18.74. Masheto had a hand in two of Illinois’ four first-place performances. The Botswana native, takes home his third career weekly Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor. Men’s Field Athlete of the Week Jay Gillespie, Michigan State Fr., Allen Park, Mich. / Allen Park Gillespie set a new school record in the weight throw on Friday at the Michigan State Invitational. The newcomer’s third-place toss of 60-4.5 (18.40m.) topped his previous career-high by nearly two meters. The Allen Park, Mich. native, also placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 50-0.75 (15.26m.). Gillespie is honored with his first weekly Big Ten accolade.
