Illinois and Michigan State Earn First Weekly Awards of the Season

Men’s Track Athlete of the Week

Masheto racked up two first-place finishes in his senior season debut at the Saluki Fast Start last Friday. The 2008 Olympian broke the tape in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.30, bettering second place by over a second. He also anchored the winning 4X400m. relay, posting a 3:18.74. Masheto had a hand in two of Illinois’ four first-place performances. The Botswana native, takes home his third career weekly Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor.

Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Jay Gillespie, Michigan State

Gillespie set a new school record in the weight throw on Friday at the Michigan State Invitational. The newcomer’s third-place toss of 60-4.5 (18.40m.) topped his previous career-high by nearly two meters. The Allen Park, Mich. native, also placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 50-0.75 (15.26m.). Gillespie is honored with his first weekly Big Ten accolade.
