Big Ten Announces Men’s Lacrosse Postseason Honors

All-Big Ten Teams

– The 2017 Big Ten men's lacrosse All-Conference teams and individual award winners were announced on Tuesday, with Maryland’s Matt Rambo earning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors from the conference's coaches. The Terrapins’ Tim Muller was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year, Ohio State’s Jake Withers earned Specialist of the Year honors for the second consecutive year, while the Buckeyes’ Tre Leclaire was named Freshman of the Year. Maryland mentor John Tillman received Big Ten Coach of the Year honors.


In conference games only, Rambo led the Big Ten with 5.6 points, 2.8 assists and 9.6 shots per outing, and ranked second with 2.8 goals per game. He enters the postseason with 33 total goals, 30 assists and a Big Ten-best 63 points.


Muller scooped up 21 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers during the regular season, helping anchor a Terrapin defensive unit that allowed just 9.4 goals per game in conference play.


In all games, Withers currently leads the Big Ten with a 68.3 percent faceoff percentage, and paces the conference with 7.0 ground balls per game. Withers, who was a three-time Big Ten Specialist of the Week honoree this season, becomes the first player in conference history to repeat as an individual award winner.


In conference games only, Leclaire ranks sixth in the Big Ten in goals (2.0 gpg), assists (1.4 apg) and points (3.4 ppg). Leclaire claimed three Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors during the regular season.




Tillman led Maryland to 10 regular season wins and the outright Big Ten Championship with a 4-1 conference record. During conference play, the Terrapins led the Big Ten in goals (13.0), points (19.2) and shots per game (38.2) and goals against average (9.03). The top-seeded Terrapins enter the Big Ten Tournament having won six of their last seven games and are ranked No. 1 in both the Maverik Men’s media poll and USILA/NIKE coaches’ poll.


The All-Big Ten first team features Johns’ Hopkins Nick Fields and Joel Tinney, Maryland’s Connor Kelly, Muller and Rambo, Ohio State’s Tom Carey, Eric Fannell and Withers, Penn State’s Grant Ament and Nick Aponte and Rutgers’ Michael Rexrode. Aponte was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection for the second consecutive season, while Rambo and Withers were also unanimous first-team honorees.


The Big Ten also announced six Sportsmanship Award Honorees. The students chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. This season's honorees are Johns Hopkins' John Crawley, Maryland’s Dan Morris, Michigan’s Andrew Hatton, Ohio State’s Tyler Pfister, Penn State’s Colby Kneese and Rutgers’ Connor Murphy.
