Columbus, Ohio - In the first quarterfinal game of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship, No. 4 Penn State posted a 2-1 double-overtime victory over No. 5 Northwestern at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the scored tied, 1-1, senior forward Simon Omekanda broke away and scored the game-winning goal, his fifth of the season, in the second overtime.


The Wildcats took the early lead at the 24:13 mark when senior forward Brad North recorded his seventh goal of the season off an assist from Mark Blades.


Penn State had an excellent scoring opportunity before the end of the first half, however Northwestern's goalkeeper Justin Pines made a great sliding save to keep the Wildcats up, 1-0.


In the second period, the Nittany Lions continued to push offensively, but Northwestern held onto its lead until the 81st minute. Penn State senior David Gray served the ball into the box to sophomore Ryan Badaracco, who put it in the net from three yards out to tie the game at 1-1.




In the final five minutes of regulation, Northwestern had several scoring opportunities as Gerardo Alvarez nearly notched the game winner at the 86th minute mark but PSU's goalkeeper Conrad Taylor scooped it up before the game headed into overtime.


With the game still tied in the second extra period, Omekanda notched his fifth goal of the season at the 102:49 mark, advancing Penn State to the semifinal round. The Nittany Lions outshot the Wildcats, 18-12, while Taylor tallied five saves.


The defending Big Ten Champion Penn State (7-10-1; 3-3 Big Ten) will now face No. 1 seed Indiana on Friday at 5 p.m. EST.
