Big Ten Men's Soccer Prepares to Open 2009 Season

Aug. 27, 2009

The 19th season of Big Ten men’s soccer kicks off beginning with all seven conference squads in action on September 1 or 4.

Penn State opens the 2009 campaign in front of a home crowd, welcoming Saint Francis to Happy Valley on Sept. 1. On the road, Northwestern will travel to Green Bay, Wis., to face the Phoenix, and Michigan journeys to Notre Dame to battle the No. 12-ranked Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind.

On Friday, conference preseason favorite Indiana, as well as Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin, begin the season within the friendly confines of their home fields. The Hoosiers will play host to fifth-ranked St. John’s in a rematch of last year’s NCAA quarterfinal contest, where the Red Storm ousted Indiana from the tournament in a narrow 3-2 overtime win. Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin are slated to square off against Duquesne, Gonzaga and Virginia Tech, respectively, in their home openers.

The Big Ten Network will air live coverage of 11 men’s soccer matchups this season, beginning with Indiana’s home contest against No. 3 Wake Forest on Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. ET.

Five Big Ten squads competed in the NCAA Championship last season with Indiana and Northwestern advancing to the quarterfinal round. The Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in the NSCAA/adidas preseason national rankings at No. 7.  Closely behind are the Wildcats at No. 9, and rounding out the conference in the poll are Michigan State and Michigan at No. 20 and No. 22, respectively.
