The 2014 Big Ten men’s soccer conference season opens this weekend with nationally ranked teams and nationally televised matches. On Friday, No. 12 Maryland travels to Michigan while Rutgers visits Wisconsin for a primetime showdown that will air live on BTN. On Saturday, No. 11 Indiana will host No. 16 Penn State in a top-20 match-up of undefeated teams. The weekend concludes with Northwestern traveling to Ohio State on Sunday for another nationally televised match on BTN.
All nine Big Ten Big Ten teams are competing for the Big Ten Championship and tournament seeding. The 2014 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament will include a new format featuring all nine Big Ten teams competing in back-to-back weekends. The tournament will take place Saturday, Nov. 8 – Sunday, Nov. 9 and Friday, Nov. 14 – Sunday, Nov. 16.
On Nov. 8, the No. 8 seed will take on the No. 9 seed at the site of the No. 1 seed in the first round. The quarterfinals, which will be Nov. 9, will be held at the sites of the top four seeds. The winner of the No. 8/9 match will take on the No. 1 seed, while the No. 2 seed will play the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed will take on the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed will play the No. 5 seed.
The semifinals will take place on Friday, Nov. 14, and the championship match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
Penn State is the reigning Big Ten Champion, while fifth-seeded Indiana won last year’s Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament.
