Penn State's Corey Hertzog

Sept. 28, 2009

With the first weekend of conference play in the books, the conference office announced on Monday the fourth weekly men’s soccer award winners for the 2009 season. Penn State’s Corey Hertzog was tabbed Offensive Player of the Week and Ohio State’s Matt Lampson was named Defensive Player of the Week for games played through Sept. 21-27.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Corey Hertzog, Penn State
Sophomore Forward  - Reading, Pa. – Antietam

Sophomore forward Corey Hertzog collects his second weekly honor and his first of the 2009 season after netting two goals on seven shots to help the Nittany Lions remain undefeated over two games last week.  The Reading, Pa., native began the week by firing Penn State’s lone goal into the net on Wednesday to preserve the 1-1 draw with Lehigh. He then topped that performance by recording his third game-winning goal of the season in the Nittany Lion’s 2-0 Big Ten season opening victory over No.22 Michigan on Sunday afternoon.  Hertzog tops Penn State in goals with five and is tied with front line mate Jason Yeisley for the team lead in points with 12. He has posted at least one point in five of his nine games this season, leading Penn State to a 4-0-1 mark in contests where Hertzog has either a goal or an assist to his name.

Last Penn State Offensive Player of the Week: Jason Yeisley (Sept. 7, 2009)

Defensive Player of the Week:
Matt Lampson, Ohio State
Redshirt Freshman Goalkeeper - Hilliard, Ohio - St. Charles Prep

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Matt Lampson was stellar between the pipes Sunday against Michigan State, stopping all four shots on goal to secure his third-consecutive shutout and the 1-0 victory over the Spartans. The shutout marked Lampson’s second on the week, the first coming by virtue of his three saves in the Buckeyes’ 1-0 edge over IUPUI on Wednesday. The pair of wins gives Ohio State its best start in program history as it remains unbeaten through eight games at 5-0-3. This is the first weekly laurel for the Hilliard, Ohio, native, who has not given up a goal in 322:19 of action.

Last Ohio State Defensive Player of the Week: Tim Gabel (Sept. 8, 2008)
