Michigan State and Penn State Reel in Men's Soccer Weekly Honors
Oct. 18, 2010 Big Ten Men's Soccer Weekly Release PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Michigan State's Avery Steinlage and Penn State's Corey Hertzog have been named the Big Ten Conference men's soccer Players of the Week, announced on Monday. Hertzog takes home Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Steinlage earns Defensive Player of the Week laurels. Offensive Player of the Week Corey Hertzog scored two goals in two games for Penn State last week, including a marker against No. 1 Akron on Wednesday, to earn his first weekly award of 2010. The junior scored Penn State's lone goal against Akron, just the third allowed by the top-ranked Zips this season, in the 2-1 double-overtime loss. He followed with his second goal of the week and Big Ten-leading 13th of the season in a 1-1 draw with Northwestern on Sunday. Hertzog currently leads the conference in five statistical categories and owns spots in the top 10 in three others. Last Penn State Offensive Player of the Week: Matheus Braga (Sept. 20, 2010) Defensive Player of the Week Michigan State's Avery Steinlage racked up over 146 scoreless minutes in net last week en route to his second weekly accolade of the season. Steinlage made six saves in 77 scoreless minutes against Western Michigan, helping the 21st-ranked Spartans pick up a 5-0 victory on Wednesday. The senior added to his scoreless week with 69 shutout minutes against Wisconsin on Sunday, making one save in the 3-0 win. Steinlage lowered his goals-against average to 0.98, good for third in the Big Ten, also taking over the top spot in the conference in saves (60).
