Oct. 19, 2009
The conference office announced on Monday the seventh weekly men’s soccer award winners for the 2009 season. Michigan State’s Jeff Ricondo and Avery Steinlage earned offensive and defensive honors, respectively, for games played through Oct. 12-19. The selection marks the first Spartan sweep over the men’s soccer weekly accolades since November of 2008.
Offensive Player of the Week:
Jeff Ricondo, Michigan State
F/M - Jr. - Wheaton, Ill - St. Francis Prep
Jeff Ricondo scored the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the second overtime to give Michigan State is first conference win of the season in the 1-0 triumph over No. 23 Indiana. The outcome marked MSU's third consecutive win over the Hoosiers, dating back to last season when the Spartans took both meetings. Ricondo led the Green and White with three shots and two points while playing the full 102:39 minutes in Sunday’s contest. This is the first weekly laurel of Ricondo’s collegiate career.
Last Michigan State Offensive Player of the Week: Louis Stephens III (Nov. 3, 2008)
Defensive Player of the Week:
Avery Steinlage, Michigan State
GK - Jr. - Grand Haven, Mich. - Spring Lake
Junior Avery Steinlage recorded a season-high eight saves to lift Michigan State to a 1-0, double-overtime victory over No. 23 Indiana last week. The Spartan goalkeeper stifled a potent offensive attack from the Hoosiers that managed 22 shots in regulation. The blanking marked the sixth shutout of the season for Steinlage, who now owns 19 clean sheets to his name, good enough to tie for third most in MSU history. This award marks Steinlage’s fourth career weekly honor, and second in 2009.
Last Michigan State Defensive Player of the Week: Avery Steinlage (Sept. 14, 2009)
