Michigan State Goalkeeper Tabbed as National Player of the Week

Oct. 22, 2008

Michigan State Goalkeeper Avery Steinlage earned National Player of the Week honors, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced on Wednesday.  The sophomore becomes the second Big Ten men’s soccer player to earn the award this season as Michigan’s Jake Stacy claimed the laurel on Oct. 8th.  This past weekend, Steinlage was the stronghold on a Spartan defense that only allowed one goal against No. 14 Illinois-Chicago and No. 18 Michigan, winning both contests.  The Grand Haven, Mich., native posted 14 saves in the two-game span and now leads the Big Ten with a 5.80 saves-per-game average.  Michigan State is currently ranked 24th in the NSCAA/adidas national poll and carries a conference record of 4-1-0.
