The conference office announced on Monday the eighth weekly men’s soccer award winners for the 2009 season. Northwestern’s Matt Eliason and Misha Rosenthal were tabbed Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for games played through Oct. 20-26. The weekly award is the second for the Wildcat duo this season.

Offensive Player of the Week:
Matt Eliason, Northwestern
F - Jr. - Lombard, Ill. - Glenbard East

Matt Eliason added to his Big Ten-leading goal total last week, posting a pair game-winners as Northwestern notched home wins over Loyola Chicago and Indiana. Eliason netted his 11th goal of the year with just 7:23 remaining in the second half as the Wildcats defeated their neighboring rivals, 1-0, on Tuesday. He then came through in the second half again on Sunday against Indiana, scoring in the 63rd minute of the match to help the Wildcats earn their first-ever home win over the Hoosiers. The strike marked his 12th goal of the year, good enough to rank second in the nation and improve his career goals total to 29 – one shy of the Northwestern all-time record. The junior forward has now amassed 12 goals in each of his last two campaigns to own the second-best season total in program history. For his performance, Eliason was also tabbed National Player of the Week by College Soccer News.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Misha Rosenthal, Northwestern
GK - Sr. - Miami, Fla. - Gulliver Prep

Misha Rosenthal posted back-to-back shutouts in goal as Northwestern recorded home wins over Loyola Chicago and Indiana last week. The Miami, Fla., native notched five saves in the Wildcats' 1-0 win over the Ramblers on Tuesday and then parlayed his success in net to stop three shots on Sunday as NU stymied the Hoosiers, 2-0. The blanking marked just the second time that Northwestern had ever shut out Indiana. With the pair of clean sheets, Rosenthal padded his school career-shutout record total to 28. The weekly award is the sixth for Rosenthal’s career.
