PARK RIDGE, Ill. - The 2006 Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament bracket is set and was released today by the conference office. Conference teams closed out their Big Ten and regular season schedules on Sunday. This year's tournament, hosted by Ohio State University, kicks off on Thursday, Nov. 2 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 5.
Indiana clinched the regular season title and the No. 1 seed heading into the Big Ten Tournament with its 1-0 win against Wisconsin on Oct. 27. As the top seed, Indiana receives a first-round bye and will play the first quarterfinal winner (No. 4 Penn State vs. No. 5 Northwestern) at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3.
Ohio State closed out its Big Ten schedule with a 2-0 win against Michigan State in the final game of the regular season. The Buckeyes garner the No. 2 seed in the tournament after beating third-seed Wisconsin in the teams' head-to-head competition during the regular season.
No. 3 Wisconsin ended the season with a record of 3-2-1 and will match up against sixth-seeded Michigan, with a conference mark of 1-2-3.
Defending regular season and tournament champion Penn State finished the conference regular season with a 3-3-0 mark to earn the No. 4 seed. The Nittany Lions will play in the first quarterfinal game on Thursday Nov. 2 at 10:30 a.m. against a fifth-seeded Northwestern team that posted a 2-4-0 record in conference play. The Wildcats secured the No. 5 seed by beating Michigan 2-0 in the regular season.
No. 7 Michigan State who finished 1-3-2 in conference play will have its chance to play No. 2 Ohio State again in the third quarterfinal game of the first day of Big Ten Tournament competition.
