After winning a share of the Big Ten Championship on Saturday, Penn State and Northwestern earned the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, in the 2012 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament. The tournament will be held on the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Ill., with opening-round matchups on Wednesday, semifinal games on Friday and the championship match on Sunday. The tournament winner will earn the Big Ten’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
The Nittany Lions and Wildcats both ended the season with 3-1-2 conference records, with Penn State owning the head-to-head tiebreaker to earn the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. Northwestern will face No. 7 Ohio State at approximately 6 p.m. CT in Wednesday’s final game.
Michigan, which owned the head-to-head tiebreaker over Indiana, earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament after ending the season with a 3-2-1 conference record. The Wolverines will face No. 6 Wisconsin at approximately 3:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday in the tournament’s second game.
Indiana earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament after finishing 3-2-1 in conference play. The Hoosiers will face No. 5 Michigan State in the tournament’s opening game at 1 p.m. CT. In their last matchup, the Spartans edged the Hoosiers, 3-1, on Oct. 28.
The top-seeded Nittany Lions will face the winner of the Indiana-Michigan State matchup at Noon CT on Friday in the first semifinal contest. The second semifinal will pit the winner of the Michigan-Wisconsin and Northwestern-Ohio State games at approximately 2:30 p.m. CT. The tournament championship game will be held at Noon CT on Sunday.
For the first time, BTN will provide full coverage of the tournament, as the quarterfinals will be streamed live on the Big Ten Digital Network, while the semifinals and finals will be available on both BTN and BTN2Go.
