The conference office announced on Monday the final weekly men’s soccer award winners for the 2009 season. Ohio State’s David Tiemstra and Matt Lampson were tabbed Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, after leading their squad to its first outright Big Ten regular-season championship over the weekend. The selection marks Ohio State's first sweep over the weekly accolades since Sept. 12, 2005.

David Tiemstra scored the lone goal in the Buckeyes' Big Ten title game win over Michigan, 1-0, Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio. The win gave Ohio State (10-4-4, 4-2-0) its first outright Big Ten regular-season title and first No. 1 seed in the conference tournament in program history. Tiemstra's goal, his first of the season, came with two seconds remaining in the first half off a corner kick by Eric Shrigley. The sophomore from Clarendon Hills, Ill., fired the ball over the head of Michigan goalkeeper Chris Blais and into the upper left corner of the net for the win. This marks the first weekly laurel for Tiemstra, who returns the Offensive Player of the Week award to Columbus for the first time since November of 2007.

Matt Lampson earned his conference-leading eighth shutout of the season in Ohio State's Big Ten title game win over Michigan, in front of a of season-high 1,081 fans at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening. With the win, Ohio State garners its third regular-season conference title and an automatic spot in the semifinal round of the Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament. Lampson, a native of nearby Hilliard, Ohio, strengthened his bid for Big Ten Freshman of the Year by finishing the night with a career-high eight saves, including five in the second half and three in the final 10 minutes of play, against Michigan's 10 second-half shots. The defensive award marks the third for Lampson’s young career.
