Dec. 4, 2008
The 2008 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship quarterfinals commence on Saturday, Dec. 6 with two Big Ten squads competing. No. 6 seed Indiana and Northwestern will both play on the road in hopes of advancing to the national semifinals in Frisco, Texas with games played at Pizza Hut Park.
Indiana travels to No. 3 seed St. John’s for a 5 p.m. ET kickoff in Queens, N.Y. at Belson Stadium. The Hoosiers defeated Big Ten foe Michigan in Round 3 of the championship by a decisive 3-0 final tally. St. John’s advanced by ousting No. 14 seed UC Irvine, 3-2, in the third round. Battle-tested Indiana owns a 7-1-2 record against top-25 teams this season, shutting out eight of those squads.
Northwestern journeys to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on No. 13 seed North Carolina at 2 p.m. ET on Fetzer Field. The Wildcats upstaged No. 5 seed Akron, 1-0, in front of a home crowd and the Tar Heels made it past Illinois-Chicago with a 3-2 final score in Round 3. Northwestern has allowed only 12 goals in 22 games this season, ranking fourth best in the country. NU’s stingy backline will look to silence a UNC offense that averages over 2 scores per contest.
