Michigan In First Place After Day 1 of Competition

Michigan jumped out to a commanding lead after the first day of competition at the 2009 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The Wolverines garnered 277.5 points followed by Indiana and Minnesota who are tied for second with 154 team points. Purdue posted 142 total points, sitting in fourth-place trailed closely by Ohio State with 136. Michigan earned four first-place finishes, including the opening event in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Matt Patton was one of two individual champions for Michigan as he claimed the 500 freestyle and teammate Tyler Clary took the top podium spot in the 200 individual medley. The Wolverines capped off the evening by winning the 400 medley relay. Purdue garnered the remaining two events as senior Andrew Langenfeld and freshman David Boudia set Big Ten records in the 50 freestyle and off the one-meter board, respectively. Competition resumes on Friday at noon ET with the trials of the 400 individual medley.
