Michigan Wins Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships

Michigan collected its second straight Big Ten crown at the 2009 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.  The Wolverines tallied 829 points to garner the program’s 34th title in schools history.  Ohio State received runner up honors with 521 team points followed closely by third-place Minnesota with 507.  Host Purdue notched fourth place, posting 494 points.  

Michigan earned four first-place finishes on Saturday, including the final event of the evening in the 400-yard freestyle relay.  Tyler Clary (200 backstroke), Matt Patton (1650 freestyle) and Bobby Savulich (100 freestyle) all garnered gold medals for the Wolverines.  Ohio State’s Sam Pelkey collected the Buckeye’s lone win of the championships in the 200 breaststroke while Wisconsin’s Scott Rice touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly for the Badger’s only event win.  Purdue freshman David Boudia captured his third top podium spot of the meet by winning the platform competition.
