Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year Award Nominee -- Michael Richards, Minnesota

Through Friday, the Big Ten will highlight each of the 22 student-athletes nominated for the conference’s Jesse Owens Male and Suzy Favor Female Athlete of the Year Awards. Award winners are voted on by a pre-selected media panel and will be announced live on the Big Ten Network’s season-ending awards show on Monday at 6:30 p.m. CT.

MICHAEL RICHARDS – MINNESOTA – SWIMMING
A 12-time All-American, Richards has won back-to-back Big Ten titles in the 50 and 100 freestyles. He has won five conference championships in his career and is the Big Ten record holder in the 50 free and 200 free relay. He was named the 2011 Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships after taking home titles in the 50 and 100 freestyles and the 200 free relay, becoming the first Minnesota swimmer since 1963 to repeat as champion in both sprint freestyle events.
