Illinois And Ohio State Advance To NCAA Second Round

Illinois Begins Title Defense by Defeating WMU Top ranked Illinois beat Western Michigan on its home court Saturday morning, 4-0, extending the team's dual match winning streak to 61. The Illini continued their strong doubles play, taking the first point of the match against Western Michigan. At second singles, Chris Martin and Michael Calkins dropped their opponents, 8-3, while Ryler DeHeart and GD Jones won at No. 3, 8-1. Illinois wrapped up the victory with three straight singles wins from Michael Calkins, Chris Martin, and GD Jones at third, fourth, and fifth singles, respectively. Brian Wilson, one of the nation's top collegiate players, did not play in the singles portion of the match. Illinois will face the winner of the Arizona State vs. Louisville match-up, Sunday, in Champaign.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ohio State Knocks Out South Carolina, 4-0 The Buckeyes got things started right, claiming the early point in doubles. The 25th ranked tandem of Jeremy Wurtzman and Joey Atas won their match at No. 1 doubles, while Scott Green and Ross Wilson defeated their opponents on the second court. In singles play, Ohio State got three quick wins from Wurtzman, Devin Mullings, and Dennis Mertens. Mullings clinched first at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1, followed by Mertens, 6-1, 6-4 on court six. Wurtzman, the third ranked player in the country, clinched the match with his, 6-4, 6-2 win over Marcus Westman at first singles. OSU will take on host team North Carolina, Sunday at 1:00 p.m., in the regional final.

Minnesota Suffers First Round Loss Minnesota fell to Clemson Saturday in Durham, N.C., in the first round of the NCAA team tennis tournament. The Gophers dropped the match, 4-0. While the Minnesota team ends its season, 14-10 on the year, senior Aleksey Zharinov's season will continue in Tulsa, Okla. Wettengel was invited to the NCAA singles tournament, which begins May 26th. |
