Moritz Baumann garners his first career weekly laurel after posting a 7-1 slate over four singles and four doubles matches to help the No. 31-ranked Wisconsin men’s tennis team improve to 4-0 on the weekend. In Saturday’s opening match, the No. 117-ranked Baumann teamed up with sophomore Peter Marrack to dominate their opponents Matt Clegg and Matt Keesey of Green Bay in an 8-1 win, their first of the season. Baumann then carried his winning ways from doubles over to singles as he defeated Clegg in back-to-back 6-1 sets. The junior Badger finished the match first in the No. 1 position after defeating Ben Raynauld of Butler University in straight sets 6-1, 6-2, helping Wisconsin clinch a 2-0 sweep over Green Bay and Butler on the day. On Sunday, Baumann paired up with Marek Michalicka to upend UW-Whitewater’s Alex Lowe and Kelvin Caiati in a decisive 8-1 victory. Baumann faced Lowe again later that afternoon in No. 1 singles play, winning straight sets 6-0, 6-3. The Inzlingen, Germany native then teamed up with Michalicka again to record an 8-2 win at the No. 1 position over Northern Illinois’ Matt Hansen and Jurica Grubisic. In singles, Baumann continued the tough play that he had shown all weekend as he defeated Shaun Stewart of Northern Illinois in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. With the win, Baumann improves to a perfect 4-0 in singles play.
